    My car

I previously reported my dilemma with this machine to your magazine, this is an update with my findings. The garage (non franchised) who diagnosed the sticking valve fault also told me that the 1.8 engine,in this vehicle,is actually a MITSUBISHI unit but built to a Mercedes specification.I am a member of the official Mercedes Owners club and invited them to comment on this finding.I was told that they knew Mitsubishi diesels are being used by Mercedes but they had no knowledge of petrol engines being used. The history of the hook up between the 2 companies goes back some years to when Mercedes were in some difficulties and sought after a global partner to spread costs.I have spoken,at length, with other non-franchised dealers about my "sticking valve "fault and they all concur that it is an issue with the 1.8(200) engine - they have seen several customers complain of the fault. The fault only shows up when the car has been on a good run with the engine well warmed up,so before buying one ,go for an extended test run and make sure you buy from a reputable dealer with a good warranty period.

    My car

Having just purchased this car on a 58 plate (two weeks old), I have wanted this car for ages and used the reviews here to come to a dceision. It is without a doubt a superb car. Its mechanically faultless and the new improved shape gives it a sporty look. There is nothing i dontlike (maybe the lack of a lockable glove compartment!) This is a real head turner of a car (Palladium silver/red leather!), and alas for me , therein lies the rub. Upon reflection, i didn't particluarly want to stand out a mile when i was driving or parking at the shops and i am afraid the sheer beauty of this car is its upside as well as its downside. Its a super car if you live in a leafy suburb in Poole and spend your life popping in and out of the shops during the day time. However, if you want a car that will work for you and with you and have to park it in a UK street overnight.....well, to be honest, go for something more inconspicuous....I sure wish i had. Nevertheless, its a beautiful car, and i cannot criticise the car because of my poor choice. If you really want it, go for it.

    My car

Having longed for the current generation SLK for some time, I was fortunate enough to purchase a used example 4 months ago.

The first thing you notice is the looks – it’s a real feel-good car and its nice seeing passers by look at the car with envy! The car produces a raw, sporty exhaust.

Performance and handling is top drawer – the car pulls effortlessly with quick changes (although not that smooth) with the 7G auto transmission. The handling is great and feels very safe considering all that power going through the rear wheels! Brakes are very good. The steering wheel is far too big for a sports car and would be more suited to a tractor.

Interior quality seems only average to me. My 2004 Audi A3 seemed far better. Some of the plastics feel a little cheap and I have an annoying rattle coming from behind the dash. I also have a problem with the driver’s heated seat not working but I am reluctant to take it to Mercedes having heard some of the horror stories about expensive repairs and less than impressive service. Equipment wise I probably have most of the options including air scarf and the COMAND system which are both good additions. The hi-fi on the COMAND sounds great but I would say the Sat-Nav is very average even with the 2008 update – my £100 TomTom is much better! The Xenon headlights are amazing!

Overall, a great feel-good, good handling car but doesn’t quite feel as good as the price would suggest.

    My car

This is my second SLK - the first being the 200k. Boy what a difference! The engine dominates the whole driving experience. The way it gathers speed is quite frankly hilarious. The sound the car makes is also amazing. Very easy to scare people at bus stops ;)

Once you are going warp speed its also good to know the anchors are up to the job and carry out their duties brilliantly.

Cabin however doesn't feel special enough for their "top" car. Lots of buttons to prod but it's same as any modern Benz.

Most surprising thing: Computer reporting 30mpg when doing a steady 70mph.

Bad points: Semi-polished wheels corrode easily. Flappy-padle thing - looks good but in use it isn't. Front nose - qutie low so can scrape it on speed bumps. Paint - very thin and front chips easily. Interior - SO hard to keep clean Dealer - still very poor. Treat you badly and don't really want to listen or help.
