This is the second SLK I have owned and in both cases have given me great satisfaction. The styling of the latest model is excellent, people still comment on it when parked up for fuel and it is still ahead turner. In both cases,I have purchased from new the 200k and feel it has the performance I need. The interior cabin features are much improved over the previous model and I have to recommend the air scarf even though it is extra. Mercedes, you should include in standard price.Roof down even in winter is not really a problem ,with the warm air circulating around your neck. This will not be the last SLK,I purchase,it will be interesting to see how Mercedes improve on the radical style.
I have run my SLK 350 auto for nearly two years, after having a Porsche Boxster S.
The SLK is far better looking and the roof is fantastic - you would never go back to a fabric roof.
The boot is a fair size, bearing in mind it's a two-seater roadster. The engine sounds great.
Gearing is quite short in first, second and third, but that means very quick pick-up. You must make sure you buy one with heated seats and airscarf. The only downside is that you cannot use iPods if you don't have sat-nav command. Not very forward looking of Mercedes!
If you're buying new today, you may prefer the 280 to get under the 225g/km emissions limit.
I have owned a 200k manual for 6 months now and had no problems whatsoever!! MB customer service is terrible as always - had trouble even buying the car!
The noise and performance is much better than you would think from a modest engine. I drove an auto and a manual before deciding on the manual - it sounded better and was notably faster.
Excellent build quality and the car always draws positive attention.
Manual gears are a bit notchy though and weirdly the fuel economy is worse with the manual - I drive steadily and average only early 20's combined, with max 35 on motorway at cruising speed. Never experienced the 40's that some owners talk of.
Brakes are bit weedy on the 200 though - 280 is prob best alround bet.
I highly recommend this car, you'll have no regrets - but probably a bit of stress with MB customer service. Brilliant car.
PS. Richard Drew is right - the interor is a bit of a pain to keep clean, and the interior does collect white marks from skin! And
David West is also bang on - the ariel sticking up from the rear wing looks ridiculous and is just waiting for a passing vandal to rip it off!
I have a 350 auto from new, it is simply brilliant. it has excellant room inside good storage and a practical boot. the engine is as powerfull as it is smooth and flexible, coupled to the 7 speed gearbox it makes a wonderful combination, it handles like it's on rails and is breathtakingly quick to 70?.the exhaust note rumbles like a bbc orchestra on the last night of the proms sheer audible perfection. reliability compaired to previous mercedes i have had is very good with nothing significant to report, the build quality has vastly improved compaired to the previous mercedes i have owned. there is only one negative i have with this car and that is the seats, there is no lumber support at all, everyone who gets in the car complains about it and it is a valid complaint. but that apart this is no longer a hairdresser's car but a practical sports car with a class leading roof, that can be used every day in every way. it is as akin to the town centre as it is the open winding roads of cornwall.

Amazing car, once driven, never forgotton, forget all the pretenders like BMW Z4 and Mercedes SLK, they will never have the passion of a Porsche
I love this car! Handling is great, its fun to drive and even reasonably practical!
