i currently have a 940se turbo eastate with 240,000 miles 13 years solidly built but after driving the current model and reading reviews i shall try and keep my 940 on the road a bit longer its as i suspected now fords have got volvo they are building the cars with built-in faults as they do with fords once the warrenty expires they dont give a damn, although i always found john morris motors in grimsby to be very helpful.i did think volkswagon but after reading about the dealerships what large estate do i go for?
Bought this 2003 car with 126,000 miles on the clock with full Volvo history. In the 6 months we have had it the air conditioning has stopped working twice and the front suspension has developed random clunking noises which Volvo can't rectify (yet). This is the 1st Volvo I have found attractive and the 1st one I have ever owned. The cabin is its best point. The interior is 1st class, extremely comfortable with amazing sound system and all the extras you need (and don't need). The build quality is good and after 134,000 miles our car still looks great and drives fantastically. The engine is superb. Lots of power and extremely refined for a diesel. 45mpg average. The engine is also the 1st diesel engine I have heard with a nice engine note. The car's two most annoying factors are it's unbelievably poor turning cirle (it really is the worst vehicle I have driven in that respect), and also the lack of rear legroom which is surprising for a car of this size. The steering is a little too heavy and the boot isn't as large as expected. If I can get the suspension and A/C sorted out soon then this car will be with us for many years hopefully. Like many others, I found Volvo's service poor and expensive. The tramlining that many owners complain of can easily be cured by ditching the Pirelli 6000 tyres (a common and easy fix). All in all, a good quality car. With a better turning circle, lighter steering and more rear legroom it would be a 5 star car.
My current V70 on an 03 plate has at present 138,500 miles on the clock. It has been trouble free except for a blown turbo pipe at 40k and a environmental sensor going awol at 135k, but on each instance I was able to complete my journey.
In addition at 44k I experienced a rear end shunt on the M74. TRhe offender who rammed me was in a brand new Mondeo. Hos car had nto be put on a lowloader to taken away. The V70 carried on for another 100 miles to reach home. the result of this accident gives one confidence that your family are safe in the car. It is comfortable on long runs, economical and in my opinion is value for money.
My previous V70 was on a "R" plate. It was petrol but again reliable. I sold it with 1287k on the clock.
Having test driven the new model, it is again a fine car but I would suggest a bit too expensive. I think my next purchase shall be the outgoing model
I have had a 2005 D5 Geartronic Sport with the sport suspension since new. The car has been very reliable over the 35k miles I have completed so far and the consumption has improved from an average 37mpg to nearer 40mpg since I passed the 30k mark. The sport suspension is firm but handles like a leech on the coutry roads of Berks & South Oxon where I live and work. A former colleague said if you ever consider a V70/S60 you simple must specify the sport suspension: he was right. I also had tramlining but this was cured by swapping from Pirellis to Michelins at around 24k. The car pulls magnificently off the mark with it torque multiplicating transmissions and contiues to pull strongly up to its limiter. The 5 pot howl is satisfying but cold start engine clatter is the worst aspect. Cabin quality is very good. At 3 years will definitely consider the new shape V70, though dealer servicing has not been a joy, but it never is (esp on my previous Merc). As mentioned the turning circle takes some getting used to, but no big deal. In conclusion a quality, fast, spacious car. Specify the sports suspension and swap to Michelins!
