We purchased a V70 SE Auto as a life time investment and at 6 months old from a dealer.
Based on history of company-owned Volvo 740Gl, three Rover 820s, Audi and Mercedes.
Sadly the Volvo V70 SE Auto, registered March 2002, was a disaster! It kept breaking-down.
I've had problems with: a sudden loss of power, steering fluid, flat battery, immobiliser, constant light bulbs blowing, clunking on low gear changes. I had to call out the AA/RAC/GreenFlag on many occasions.
In summary, it's the most unreliable car we have ever had. Austin Montego and 1100s were far more reliable. So, after a final inconclusive 10 days in a garage, we part-exed for an Astra most reliable estate.
Throughout, Volvo maintained it was our fault that the battery kept going flat and your (WHAT CAR) comments re this problem were unheard of by garages. So, clearly our faults, and Volvo was not for our lives!
The V70 T5 has been a totally reliable "workhorse".
Whilst steering and handling are slightly below BMW 5 Series standards, the car is thoroughly competent and a pleasure to drive. It's not quite as fast as I was expecting, though, (more power please, Volvo!) and the turning circle is mind-bogglingly large: Don't expect parking to be straightforward!
As a fast and versatile estate, I think this has to be one of the all-time greats.
One of the best cars I have owned, a comfortable family car for shifting children and large loads.
I have previously owned a 140bhp V70 and now own a T5. The 140 had an auto box and felt slightly underpowered , the T5 is awesome. Cabin ergonomics are fantastic, best of any car I've owned / driven in over 25yrs of driving.
Both cars returned about 22mpg around town and 32mpg on the motorway, using super plus unleaded. I would recommend the V70 to anyone. Only grumble, the turning circle is poor.
