The Mazda 2 has a reasonably plush interior, economical mild-hybrid engines and even the entry-level model is very well equipped, too. However, in key areas like refinement, ride comfort, handling, performance and practicality there are a number of other small car rivals which are easier to recommend.

The main reason for opting for this range-topping trim is that it’s the only version you can have with the range-topping Skyactiv G 115 engine, which is the best performer in the lineup. However, it pushes the price up very high, at which point many other rivals are better purchases. You also get a heated steering wheel.

The quickest and best engine in the lineup, but also the most expensive, which is why we think the cheaper 1.5 e-Skyactiv G 90 is a more savvy purchase.
