Munich-based BMW is another of the ‘big three’ of luxury car makers, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz. Founded in 1916, BMW is currently the 10th largest car maker in the world, selling over two million vehicles in 2014, including those under Rolls-Royce and Mini marques.
BMW is known for opening up innovative product niches, with models such as the X6 SUV coupe and i3 electric city car introducing new types of vehicle that were previously unexplored by mainstream manufacturers. The BMW range currently stands at over 40 models - and further expansion is planned for 2016.
The core of the line-up remains executive saloons such as the 3 Series and 5 Series, their estate car stablemates, and SUVs like the X1 and X3. However, BMW has also been branching out into the MPV market with the 2 Series Active Tourer - a notable vehicle for the firm, since it is the first to have front-wheel drive instead of rear- or four-wheel drive.
