The BMW 3 Series leads the charge in the premium executive car class. Its primary appeal is the way it drives but its engines and infotainment system are first-rate too. The firm ride on M Sport models is just about the only thing we can grumble about in this near-flawless executive car.

M Sport comes with a similar amount of kit to Sport but adds 18in alloy wheels, black exterior detailing, more aggressive-looking bumpers and firmer M Sport suspension. It also gets Sensatec (faux leather) and Alcantara trim for the seats.

The entry-level engine is a 181bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol. Its revvy nature really suits the sporty character of the car, plus it’s the most affordable engine in the line-up.
