In 840d form, the 8 Series is in a class of its own: a diesel luxury coupé that’s relatively cheap to run, offers very strong performance and is capable of covering long distances between fill-ups. But the petrol M850i is harder to justify, being less comfortable than the Mercedes-Benz S560 Coupé and less entertaining than the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin DB11.
