Going electric has fixed some of the weak points of the DS 3 – but not all of them. It’s quieter, for example, and a little less fractious along bumpy roads. Objectively, though, rivals such as the Kia Niro EV and Tesla Model 3 have a longer range, are better to drive and are much more practical.

Top-spec Opera comes packed with equipment including wireless phone charging, a reversing camera, front parking sensors, a head-up display, and an electric driver front driver seat. Unfortunately, it costs almost as much as a far more capable Tesla Model 3.

This is our favourite internal-combustion engine because it combines decent performance with reasonable running costs.
