Four-wheel-drive versions of the EV9 are seriously quick with 0-62mph taking just 5.3 seconds. They cost more, though, and the official range between charges drops to 313 miles.

Buyers seeking value for money should have Kia towards the top of their shopping list.

Although once a niche brand in the UK, today Kia outsells many more established brands, helped by its market-leading seven-year warranty and a strong reputation for reliability; in fact, Kia regularly finishes towards the top of our reliability surveys.

There are plenty of models to choose from, too, ranging from the small Picanto city car to the Ceed family hatchback and the Sorento large SUV. The Picanto was the first Kia to win its class at the What Car? Car of the Year awards.

This range-topping trim is too pricey to recommend, but adds a sunroof, a head-up display, and a 14-speaker Meridian sound system.

It often pays to be different, and the practical and comfortable Kia EV9 is a tempting proposition. However, if you can live with five seats or are prepared to consider petrol and plug-in hybrid alternatives, the EV9 doesn’t stack up quite so well because of its high price. The cheapest RWD Air model makes the most sense: it gets the longest range of all EV9s and is kitted out with plenty of standard equipment.
