What should I look for in a used Mercedes E-Class saloon?

Take your desired E63 for a test drive and make sure the engine runs smoothly and the nine-speed automatic is working as it should, because fixes to these items will be costly. With so much power going through its wheels, you'll also want to check the tyres have some life left on them – they'll be expensive to replace.

Don't forget that the E63, especially the estate, is a practical car that's probably been used as such. Check the interior is in good condition and so is the boot.

Safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, traffic sign recognition and lane-departure warning and assistance. Euro NCAP awarded the standard Mercedes E-Class its top five-star crash-test rating, with a particularly high score for adult occupancy protection. That was several years ago, though, and since then the tests have become much stiffer so it's almost impossible to compare the results with more modern car designs.

What are the most common problems with a used Mercedes E-Class saloon?

The E63 doesn't have any recalls to its name, but it's good to look at what the regular E-Class has against it. Fortunately, most of the recalls shouldn't apply to the E63, because they describe issues that were resolved before the E63 began production. Some, such as one describing the potential of engine seizure and an issue with rear seatbelt tensioners, could apply, though, because they came about in 2017. Check with your local Mercedes dealer if you have any concerns.

Is a used Mercedes E-Class saloon reliable?

Although the E63 wasn't cited specifically, but we can look at how the regular E-Class performed in our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey. It ranked 12th out of 24 cars in the executive car class – a decent result. As a brand, Mercedes came 24th out of 32 manufacturers featured.
