The Mercedes GLS has an impressively punchy and smooth diesel engine, and its smart interior will comfortably accommodate seven occupants, but the build quality and ride comfort disappoint for a luxury SUV of this price. The 450d makes the most sense in AMG Line Premium Plus trim.
This is the most luxurious GLS. The exterior comes with 22in alloy wheels, Maybach logos and electrically extending side steps. Inside, the rear doors have electric sunblinds and upgraded Nappa leather seats.
This uses a slightly less powerful version of the 4.0-litre V8 in the AMG GLS 63, developing 590bhp and 538lb ft of torque. This is enough for a 0-62mph time of 4.9sec.
