Category: Large SUV

The Shogun is rugged, reliable and pretty good off-road, but on the road it feels many years out of date

What should I look for in a used Mitsubishi Shogun 4x4?

Both forms of Shogun are fairly large cars and will have been used in tight urban streets and in supermarket car parks so check the bodywork for any scuffs or dents. If the car has been used for towing, check for any unusual noises from the four-wheel drive system. Another point worth considering is that Mitsubishi increased its standard warranty in 2015 from the original three years to five years.

The good news is that a lot of Shogun owners have run their cars for many years without encountering any faults other than the usual wear and tear. Some issues have been reported with the fuel pump failing, which causes erratic idling speeds. There have been reports of the top timing chain guides working loose and causing a rattling noise in the engine, so check timing chains and tensioners carefully if you suspect this area. Also the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve can get blocked by a build-up of carbon on the Shogun. You would notice this is a problem with the acceleration and a lack of power. You may also be noticing that the engine is idling very roughly instead of at a consistent speed. Correct servicing is vital. There have been some oil leaks from the oil pressure switch

Electrics seem to be the main area of concern, however, with the infotainment system often behaving erratically and on older models failure of the electric windows.

Mitsubishi as a brand finished in joint fourth place out of 31 manufacturers in our most recent reliability survey.
