There's a lot to like about the Volvo S90: it's spacious, classy and refreshingly different to its ubiquitous German rivals. However, it's not as rounded as the best of them, nor as good to drive.
As for the petrol engine, it doesn’t do enough to justify choosing it over a diesel equivalent. The D4 is more responsive and efficient, and only fractionally more expensive for private buyers. And for company car drivers the diesel also makes more sense financially, sitting in a lower tax band.
Even if you're desperate for petrol power in your luxury car, we’d recommend you look at the BMW 520i, which has better claimed fuel economy than this S90 and is only a little bit pricier.
