We first drove the Ford Mondeo Estate back in October and believed it to be a serious contender for class leader, despite the high-quality competition provided by, amongst others, the Skoda Octavia Estate and the Volkswagen Golf Estate.

The Mondeo Estate that we drove is now available with a saving of more than £2500 off its list price.

For

Boot space is sizeable, with 525 litres of room available while the rear seats are in place, and with those seats down that increases to a cavernous 1630 litres.

Kneeroom is bountiful in the back and general cabin space is generous for all passengers.

The Ecoboost engine in this model pulls nicely from less than 2000rpm and is very settled at motorway speeds, where the car is very refined.

A new 8.0-inch colour touch-screen keeps the dashboard clutter-free and is a big improvement on the outdated system found in the previous Mondeo.

Against

The menus on the infotainment system aren’t all that intuitive, and the fixtures and buttons on the dashboard feel a bit flimsy.

Should I add any options?

Titanium trim brings alloy wheels, keyless start, sports seats, sat-nav, automatic headlights and wipers and a new lane-keep assist system on top of the generous amount on offer as standard.

Luxuries such as active park assist, front and rear parking sensors and a Sony DAB navigation system with 12 speakers can be added for £450 each.
