The car: Honda Civic Tourer 1.8 i-VTEC SE Plus
The saving: £2810
The discounted price: £19,140
The broker:

One of our main criticisms of the Civic Tourer is its price, but this deal helps shift the balance back in the Honda’s favour.

The Civic Tourer is renowned for its huge boot, which is one of the biggest in this class. It is practical and square, plus has a low load-height to make filling it even easier. There is also further underfloor storage and cinema-style rear seat bases, which flip up for more versatile storage options.

SE Plus models have the option of adaptive suspension, but even the standard mechanical setup provides a pleasant ride and handling compromise.

Although the 1.8-litre petrol engine isn’t our first choice because of its comparative lack of performance, it makes up for this with improved refinement over the diesel and can still average 44.1mpg.

There should be few concerns about reliability, a point backed up by the company’s sixth place in the 2014 JD Power survey.

As mentioned, the petrol engine does struggle at times, particularly below 2000rpm and this is exacerbated with a full compliment of passengers and luggage.

The dashboard can frustrate, with the instruments badly laid out and partially hidden by the steering wheel. Some people find that the driving position is too high and that rear visibility is also limited.

Should I add any options?
SE Plus models come well specified, with 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a DAB radio, automatic lights and wipers, plus front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera all fitted as standard.

Options include the adaptive suspension, which improves the ride and handling still further, plus a T-Grade technology package that adds satellite-navigation and a Bluetooth connection.
