Mitsubishi Lancer set for return to UK

The Mitsubishi Lancer is set to return to the UK this summer, according to the company's UK managing director.

'We're looking at reintroducing the Lancer,' said MD Lance Bradley. 'It was a car that sold reasonably well, but when [the Yen] exchange rates went against us it became impossible.

'Hopefully the cars will arrive this summer. The decision will be finalised within the next couple of weeks – we have been talking to the factory for some time.'

The high-performance Mitsubishi Lancer Evo won't be returning, though, with the Ford Focus-sized hatchback set to be offered with two conventional engines.

'We would be looking to introduce a petrol and diesel,' said Bradley. He also said that the Lancer would most likely be sold with just one trim level, and at a price that represents 'outstanding value'.

Performance figures are not yet available, but Bradley confirmed they are the same engines currently offered in the ASX crossover - a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.8-litre diesel. The diesel averages around 55mpg in the ASX, and would be expected to perform similarly in the Lancer.

Pricing is also yet to be confirmed, but Bradley is intent on offering good value. It is expected to start from less than £15,000. If the Lancer does return to the UK, then the first cars will arrive in the summer.
