Front space, rear space, seating flexibility, boot

Up front, both cars offer loads of space, plus they're surprisingly roomy in the back for 'small cars', allowing a six-footer to sit behind a similarly sized driver.

However, the Dacia Sandero has the edge for rear head and knee room, and its interior is significantly wider, so it's the more comfortable car when you have three people sitting side by side.

Earning the Volkswagen Polo a few points back is the fact that its rear door bins are generously sized, whereas the Sandero’s are smaller and less useful.

On the other hand, while the Polo's boot is officially bigger, it's not as well shaped, so we actually managed to fit an extra carry-on suitcase in the boot of the Sandero. Both cars feature 60/40 split folding rear seats as standard.
