Used test: Audi A5 Coupe vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe
Buyers looking for a smart and upmarket coupe could do a lot worse than these two, but which one makes more sense when bought used?...

Our Verdict
There’ll be many for whom the lure of the three-pointed star will be more than enough to justify buying an E-Class Coupe. Allied to its undeniably handsome looks, it’s certainly got a lot of showroom appeal. It’s an accomplished car on the road, too, and when you take into consideration its surprisingly low running costs it makes a really strong case for itself.
However, that’s not quite enough to secure it a victory here, even though this is a very closely fought battle. You see the Audi is just a little bit better in a number of key areas. With its smooth V6 engine, which provides a real surge of usable power combined with impressive and addictive refinement, as well as confidence-inspiring all-weather handling and an exquisitely finished interior, the A5 proves to be everything you’d want from a posh coupé. The fact that you can have such strong performance and also that reasonably good fuel economy at the same time is simply a bonus.

For Superb all-weather usability; smoother engine; slicker infotainment
Against Firmer ride; less space in the back; restrained interior design
Verdict Conservative, but a fine all-rounder
