As large SUVs go, the X-Trail is a spacious, comfortable and quiet cruiser, with the option of seven seats. The e-Power hybrid system brings smooth driving manners, if not miraculous fuel economy figures. The main issue is that for similar money there are plenty of rivals that are better at being a seven-seat SUV, offering even more space and versatility.

If you want to keep costs down, Acenta Premium feels like a good compromise between price and equipment. It takes all the equipment of Visia but adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, front parking sensors, a rearview camera and keyless entry.

So far we’ve tried the E-Power engine with E-4orce four-wheel drive, but we reckon it’s probably worth sticking with this 201bhp two-wheel drive version, which manages 0-62mph in 8.0sec.
