Its main issue is that plenty of price rivals are better at being a seven-seat SUV, offering even more space and versatility. If you do buy an X-Trail but don't need four-wheel drive, the front-wheel-drive e-Power in entry-level Acenta Premium trim offers the best value.

The engine
See full engine specsDespite being the most powerful version of the X-Trail and officially sprinting from 0-62mph in 7.0sec, the E-Power E-4orce doesn’t feel all that fast. It has plenty of oomph to get you up to speed on a motorway slip road, but we don’t think the power and grip benefits are really worth the extra investment.
