As large SUVs go, the X-Trail is a spacious, comfortable and quiet cruiser, with the option of seven seats. The e-Power hybrid system brings smooth driving manners, if not miraculous fuel economy figures. The main issue is that for similar money there are plenty of rivals that are better at being a seven-seat SUV, offering even more space and versatility.

Tekna+ adds all the bells and whistles, taking all the Tekna trim’s equipment and adding an upgraded Bose stereo system with 10-speakers, 20in alloy wheels and premium leather seats. Like the Tekna trim, however, it’s too expensive to recommend.

The entry-level mild hybrid engine has 161bhp for a 0-62mph sprint in 9.6sec. It’s powerful enough, but a hesitant gearbox and noisy engine make this nowhere near as smooth to drive as the e-Power alternatives.
