The Suzuki Baleno is unlikely to set your heart alight, nor provide a particularly polished driving experience, but it's very spacious and temptingly cheap to buy and run

What should I look for in a used Suzuki Baleno hatchback?

It's likely that the Baleno’s use will be mostly urban, so check for dings in the bodywork caused by minor bumps in tight car parks. It’s also worth looking at the alloy wheels, on the versions that have them, to check they haven’t been scraped against a kerb too vigorously.

What are the most common problems with a used Suzuki Baleno hatchback?

Battery might fail to charge and cause engine stall

Due to incorrect software in the engine control module, the start/stop off light might blink and the start/stop system might become inoperative. If the car is driven continuously in this condition, the lead-acid battery will not be charged. In the worst case, there is a possibility that the lights will dim and the engine might stall and not restart due to low battery voltage. Contact your local Suzuki dealer if you believe your vehicle might be involved in this recall.

Integrated starter generator belt might fail

Due to a lack of strength in the integrated starter generator (ISG) in mild hybrid models, the belt might break during usage. If this happens, the water pump will become inoperative and the charging light will illuminate. The coolant temperature warning light will also light due to an increase in coolant temperature. In the worst-case scenario, the engine might stall and not restart.

Is a used Suzuki Baleno hatchback reliable?

The Baleno didn't feature in the 2022 What Car? Reliability Survey, but Suzuki as a brand did. It ranked fifth out of 32 manufacturers – a really confidence-inspiring result.
