The VW Arteon Shooting Brake offers a stylish alternative to boxier estate cars without losing very much at all in the way of practicality. It's really spacious, well equipped, has a pleasant interior and a decent range of engines. For private buyers, we recommend the 2.0 TSI 190 petrol engine and Elegance trim, but as a company car, the plug-in hybrid will be a better option.

Where Elegance trim focuses on comfort, R-Line has a sportier edge to it. As such, you get all of the standard kit from the entry-level trim but add 19in alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, a panoramic sunroof and interior ambient lighting. Strangely, R-Line trim doesn’t come with a reversing camera, something that’s standard with Elegance trim.

This entry-level diesel engine has the option of a seven-speed automatic gearbox, 148bhp and hits 0-62mph in 9.5sec. Officially it averages nearly 60mpg and is well worth considering if you do a lot of miles.
