Overall, in the fight of <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/new-audi-e-tron-gt-vs-porsche-taycan/n23426">Audi E-tron GT vs Porsche Taycan</a>, the latter wins. It's a close one, though, and the E-tron has a price advantage, both on the new and used market. We would also easily forgive someone for&nbsp;choosing the GT solely&nbsp;because they prefer the way it looks.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/bmw/i4/hatchback/review/n23575">BMW i4</a> is a worthy alternative, being a bit cheaper to buy (new and used) and available with a longer range –its eDrive40 variant can officially go&nbsp;367 miles between charges.&nbsp;

What is it like?

Reliability

There are currently two recalls attached to the E-tron GT, although one of them only involves nine cars. The other involves more – 322, to be exact – and describes an issue with a belt-fastened sensor. With any recall, contact your local dealer to have it resolved.&nbsp;

At the moment, all we have to go on is Audi’s performance&nbsp;in the 2023&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/class/reliability">What Car? Reliability Survey</a>. It came in 26th&nbsp;place out of 32&nbsp;manufacturers.&nbsp;

Saloon

Audi is a brand that sets the standard for interior quality, and this, combined with its vast and ever-growing model line-up, has helped it become one of the ‘big three’ German prestige car makers, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The A3 hatchback, A4 executive saloon and Q7 SUV are all common - yet upmarket - sights on UK roads.

At least some of Audi's success over the past 30 years can be attributed to the growth in sales of vehicles with four-wheel drive; the company arguably led the way in bringing 4x4 technology into the mainstream, with its Quattro coupé in the early 1980s.

Today, most Audis are available with at least the option of four-wheel drive, while the list of SUVs from the brand includes the Q2, Q3, Q5 and Q7.

<h3>Charging</h3>

You get a port on each front wing (so there’s more chance you can get the charging cable to reach) and&nbsp;you can charge at rates of up to 270kW. This, in ideal conditions, allows a 10-80% charge in around 20 minutes.&nbsp;

The only problem is that there aren't&nbsp;many chargers capable of topping up the E-tron GT at that rate. A 100kW service station charger will boost you from 10-80% in 40 minutes, or at home you can charge from empty to full from a wall box in 13.5hrs.

<h3>Insurance and servicing</h3>

Every E-tron GT belongs to the maximum insurance group of 50, meaning it's a pricy car to insure. A single service via Audi costs £437.87. Instead, you could buy two services for&nbsp;£875.86 or three for £971.72.&nbsp;

As of writing, an early <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/e-tron-gt/saloon/review/n22728">Audi E-tron GT</a>&nbsp;should set you back at least £51,000 –&nbsp;for what you're getting, that's a&nbsp;very reasonable bill to pay. The RS version jumps up to around £80,000, which is&nbsp;less compelling.&nbsp;

Examples of the regular GT from 2022 tend to demand upwards of £60,000, while those from 2023 go for around £80,000. If you'd like a nearly new RS, budget for around £90,000.&nbsp;

From performance to electric range to equipment, the entry-level E-tron GT more than delivers. Higher variants simply aren't worth the extra cash, although if you have an abundance of money, the lightning-quick RS is worth a look.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The best of the breed offer sufficient range between charges to fit in with most people’s lifestyles – and in the real world, not on some far-fetched official test cycle.

Electric

Nothing out of the ordinary just yet – do the usual visual checks of things like the wheels and tyres, as well as take it for a test drive if you can.&nbsp;

In terms of safety, the e-tron GT hasn't been crash-tested by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/how-euro-ncap-crash-tests-save-lives/n15107">Euro NCAP</a>&nbsp;but the five-star rating awarded to the Taycan bodes well, and it comes with automatic emergency braking&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/what-is-aeb-and-how-does-it-work/n3283">(AEB)</a>&nbsp;and lane-keeping assistance as standard from new –&nbsp;blind-spot monitoring available was an option from the factory.

Its appearance in the film Avengers Endgame may have you sold on this <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/electric-cars/n17000">electric car</a>&nbsp;already, but you shouldn't buy a used <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/e-tron-gt/saloon/review/n22728">Audi E-tron GT</a>&nbsp;without reading this review first.&nbsp;

Firstly, just one battery – a 93kWh one – option is available with&nbsp;the E-tron GT, although there are different power outputs to choose from. The entry-level one isn't lacking, mind you, possessing&nbsp;two electric motors (for four-wheel drive) and&nbsp;469bhp –&nbsp;for a 2.5sec burst, it can beef that up to 523bhp as well. All of this&nbsp;equates to 0-62mph in 4.1sec, although we clocked it doing&nbsp;0-60mph in 3.9sec at our private test track.

The RS model ups the ante with a consistent 590bhp or, when that’s not quite enough, a 2.5sec burst of 637bhp. That fires you off like a mortar from rest to 62mph in just 3.3sec.&nbsp;

The E-tron GT is similarly quick to the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/taycan/saloon/review/n20184">Porsche Taycan</a>: the two cars are mechanically related, sharing the 93kWh battery and the electric motors, among other things. That said, you're guaranteed that battery and two electric motors with the E-tron GT, yet the&nbsp;Taycan is actually available with&nbsp;a smaller battery and rear-wheel drive.&nbsp;

In reality, the E-tron GT isn't quite as exciting to drive as the Taycan.&nbsp;The Taycan is tuned for ultimate agility, while the E-tron GT is purposely slightly softer (<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/audi">Audi</a>&nbsp;says it’s closer to the ethos of a grand tourer).&nbsp;It’s still a great-handling&nbsp;electric car, mind you, even if it has a keener focus on comfort – that'll come as a&nbsp;plus for a fair few buyers, in fact.&nbsp;

When we&nbsp;tested the E-tron GT's&nbsp;real-world range, it accomplished&nbsp;around 230 miles – via a mix of town, A-road and motorway driving. That&nbsp;all but matched what you can expect from the Taycan 4S (when&nbsp;it's fitted with the same 93kWh battery).

The basic architecture of the E-tron GT's interior is the same as the&nbsp;Taycan's, too. That’s great, because it means the relationship between the pedals, steering wheel and seat are spot-on. There’s loads of adjustment to modify it as required as well.

There's lots of head and leg room, and the interior, like the rest of the E-tron GT, is wide. Very wide, actually. So whether you ate all your greens as a kid or all the pies, you should fit in just fine. You’ll find lots of storage space, too.&nbsp;

The rear boot is big enough for a buggy or a set of golf clubs. It&nbsp;matched the tally of six carry-on suitcases that the Taycan's will swallow&nbsp;with some room left over.&nbsp;There's room for the charging cables&nbsp;in the&nbsp;front trunk, which can also fit one more carry-on case if required.

A 12.3in digital screen houses the E-tron GT’s instruments is extremely clear and&nbsp;high resolution. It's also easy to&nbsp;configure from the steering wheel buttons – as opposed to the Taycan's instrument screen that also has touch functions.

The E-tron GT’s uses the same 10.1in touchscreen you get in most of the latest&nbsp;Audis.&nbsp;You get the usual – sat-nav,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-android-auto/n1194">Android Auto</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/what-is-apple-carplay/n1193">Apple CarPlay</a>, as well as wireless phone-charging.&nbsp;If you enjoy music, the RS version has a 16-speaker, 710-watt B&amp;O stereo, which you can find&nbsp;regular E-tron GTs with (if the original owner paid extra)&nbsp;as part of the Comfort and Sound Pack. It sounds good but not exceptional.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As for other equipment, you get a lot with even the entry-level car: it has&nbsp;LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof and eight-way electric front seats. Luxuries include&nbsp;20in alloy wheels, power-folding door mirrors, keyless entry, a powered boot lid with gesture control, privacy glass, heated front seats and three-zone climate control.

The RS e-tron GT includes 21in alloy wheels, upgraded air suspension, 18-way sports seats with massaging and ventilation, four-wheel steering, an engine sound generator, an electronic rear differential and beefed-up brakes.
