The saving: £3489
The discounted price: £35,416

For
The S3 Cabriolet is a versatile car. It has a reasonably large boot, space for four adults, superb build quality and can fold its roof at up to 31mph. Plenty of equipment is included as standard, including leather upholstery, DAB radio and Bluetooth.

It also has 296bhp, a six-speed twin-clutch auto gearbox, quattro all-wheel drive, and can launch itself from 0 to 62mph in 5.4sec. Despite this monstrous performance it still returns an average of 39.8mpg and emits 165g/km of CO2.

Inside, the S3 Cabriolet has the same high quality interior as the A3, which means well-damped switchgear and an intuitive user interface. Space isn’t bad considering it’s a four-seat convertible, with enough room for four adults provided they aren’t significantly taller than six feet.

It rides with composure, too. The standard-fit adaptive dampers lean towards the firm side, but isolate the car from the worst surfaces. The body is well controlled at all times and, combined with quattro all-wheel drive, makes the S3 Cabriolet an easy car to drive very fast.

Against
It’s expensive. Even with this deal, the S3 Cabriolet is a pricey proposition. The main competition comes not from rivals but from the cheaper A3 Cabriolet, which in 1.8 TFSI quattro guise is still quick, well-equipped and has all-wheel drive, yet costs £7155 less than the S3.

Equally, for a few grand more, and minus a couple of seats, you could get an entry-level Porsche Boxster, which is in a different performance league.

The high price seemingly doesn’t merit sat-nav, which, irritatingly, is a £495 option on top of an already expensive car.

Should I add any options?
Only sat-nav, otherwise DAB radio, Bluetooth, auto lights and wipers, climate control, leather upholstery and xenon headlights are all standard.
