    My car

I have been very pleased with my 2004 Range Rover HSE with the 4.4 V8. It now has over 100K miles and the only issue besides normal maintenance has been a broken sunroof motor, most likely from over use. On road it is very quiet and comfortable necessitating the use of the max speed chime to prevent speeding tickets. Overtaking slower traffic is quick and uneventful even when traveling uphill with a full load of passengers and luggage. The A/C system is exceptional which is essential in Hawaii. Off road this vehicle is far more capable than my 1995 RR Classic LWB soft-dash (1994 RR LSE in UK). However, the paint seems to be less resistant to scratches and brush stripes than the older Classic. It can be a challenge to get good off-road tires for the 20” rims here on the islands. Around town expect to get 16 mpg and on the highway I tend to see 20-22 mph which is a significant improvement over the old Classic. Being able to have the BMW update the software is a real plus thus keeping the vehicle current and adding new features. I will most likely buy another one in the future because it looks and drives just right especially off road, has an amazing sound system and is not so commonplace as the BMW X5 and MB models. Both dealer service and independent shops have been fine with costs not out of line with the service provided. This vehicle cost far less each year than what is required to keep the Classic roadworthy.

    My car

I've been a LR fan for a number of years and will always allow some 'Yes, but it's a Land Rover product' forgiveness.

I've owned an '02 4.4 V8 for just over a year and really can't think of anything else I want to drive. The sound of the engine when you are pushing along is superb and moves from a standstill to above motorway speeds very quickly for the weight and size. Obviously the fuel consumption is high. I get around 16 MPG about town and 23 MPG on a longer run.

Before you buy one, go online and check with the forums to get a feel for regular issues as these can be a wealth of knowledge and you'll know in advance what costs you may be looking at.

Make sure the gearbox has had an oil change and ignore the fact that they are called 'sealed for life'. They need to see new oil every 40 / 50k miles and will save the price of a new box at 100k miles.

I would say that my car is very much like travelling first class on a plane. It's like going up the steps and turning left. You go to the same place as the others, at the same time and speed, you just get there in absolute comfort. The journey is a part of it and not something that has to be endured.

Even if you only own one for a few months, you will smile more driving this than anything else.

    My car

Purchase: We bought the car in 2010, when it was three years old. Lincoln Landrover were fantastic, picked up the car for £35,000, 3 years old with just 36,000 miles on the clock and the assurance of approved used checks and a 1 year approved used warranty.

We have owned the car for 4 years now and racked up 90,000 miles. The car is fantastic both on and off road. The engine is smooth and very powerful when needed. The interior is a wonderful place to be you sit high up and can see above all the hedge rows. On the motorway the car is second to non turning over just 2,000 revs in 6th gear at 80mph. The equipment, you are left wanting for nothing, sat nav, rear screens, sat nav, all round heated seats and even a heated steering wheel.

Running the car is however very expensive fuel economy is good what we expected really 26mpg, not bad for 2.7 tonnes. Hoever servicing, brakes and tyres are pricey. We recently had a top service 4 tyres and new front brakes and the bill was £1,500 however all the components are very big. Just don't buy and expect to be able to run this car on the cheap.

We will run the car till 100,000 miles then buy another. When we test drove alternatives: Discovery, rangerover sport, Mercedes ML and BMW X5 nothing came close either on the road, comfort, off road ability or equipment levels. If you are considering one look carefully because there are some dogs of used examples and it's worth shopping around but when you find a good example just go fo
