This car is designed for those who want to feel the unleashed rage of a powerful beast in their hands though feeling that they are in total control. It is a beautiful car. Sporty, sleek and very elegant to look at.
Mine has the external wheel carrier and despite this, the car remains stable on and off road unlike other SUVs I have driven.
I especially like the feel of ease the car has when driving. I feel like I'm being chauffeur driven even though I am the one doing the driving - i.e. a beautiful feeling of comfort and opulence.
The ML500 does consume afair bit of petrol although funnily enough, it consumes less than a 2.4 litre saloon that I once had.
Fuel consumption also depends on how it is driven. If you keep taking off from traffic lights quickly, you will literally see the fuel guage drop.
The only downside re this vehicle is that brakepads wear quite quickly but then this is a particularly heavy vehicle and as an automatic, brakepad-wearing is to be expected. Other than this, the ML500 has never given me a day's trouble since the day it was acquired.
I love this car, it is a head-turner, a babe-magnet, a nice drive or what ever you want to call it but most of all, it is just me.
It's a pleasure to drive, both on and off road. From the lights it will leave most things for dead and off road in the Aussie bush it will almost stand on its head. When engaged in the downhill mode it is awesome to just take your foot off the brakes and step out of an almost vertical car - try that with a BMW.
Inside appointments are excellent with all the adjustments you would expect, three years on and not a single serious problem. Minor things such as door-lock malfunction were fixed immediately by the dealer.
All in all an outstanding vehicle and tons of fun too.
I HAVE HAD MY ML 7 MONTHS AND CANNOT WAIT TO SELL IT. POOR PLASTICS ON DASH, CONSTANT SQUEAKING, REAR BUMPER LOOSE AND RATTLING. POOR POOR DEALERSHIP TOOK CAR IN FOR A NEW HEADLAMP REPLACMENT AND THEY SENT THE CAR HOME WITH MY WIFE, NOT TELLING HER THEY HAD SCRATCHED THE CAR IN THE WORK SHOP.
ANYBODY WANT TO BUY A ML?
Bought new in March 03, the car has been faultless. Its comfort, practicality and overall running costs have been very good (new tyres recently cost £470 but that's less than the run-flats on my Mini!).
The car is pretty fully specced too, so it is a very pleasant place to spend in regular 200-300 mile drives. It may not have the driving excellence of the BMW X5 but for sheer space and practicality it beats it hands down and at a price £10k lower.
Downside? The ride is not up to standard on uneven roads but otherwise no complaints in 26,000 enjoyable miles.
