I bought this car from new. It has the dark trim, I would avoid the tan trims as they stain easily. I have to say the car has been first class from day one. It runs well and I've now done 16000 miles and I get 42 mpg as an average. As for servicing apart from the price, but all garages are the same, it has been excellent; they even cleaned the car. Niggly faults are if you forget to shut the windows after you switch the engine off you have to restart the engine. This is my second Scenic I had an old 1999 before which was less reliable and had a waterleak in the sunroof as standard.
RUBBISH - DO NOT BUY AN AUTO GEARBOX VERSION OR YOU WILL PAY DEARLY ! 52 PLATE SCENIC, ONE PREVIOUS OWNER, 21K MILES BOUGHT JAN 06, IGNITION COILS PACKED UP ON THREE OCCASIONS, NOW AUTO BOX NEEDS REPLACING. RENAULT JUST SAY OUT OF MANUFACTURER WARRANTY - FUNNY BUT THE SPECIALISTS WARRANTY PROVIDER REFERRED ME TO HAD THREE IN TODAY AND A FURTHER BOOKING WHILST I WAS ON THE PHONE ! APPARENTLY THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE WRONG GRADE OF OIL IN THE INITIAL FILL, SO DEFINITELY A MANUFACTURING FAULT,AND RENAULT/CITROEN/PEUGEOT AUTO BOXES 1998-03 ALL USE THE SAME BOX, WHICH CAN'T BE FIXED EXCEPT BY A GEARBOX CHANGE - AT £2500 - £3000 WITH NOWHERE NEAR THAT ON THE WARRANTY VALUE RENAULT "SINCERELY HOPE THAT I WILL HAVE THE REPAIR CARRIED OUT AND CONTINUE TO ENJOY THE SCENIC" PERSONALLY, I WOULD NOT TOUCH ANOTHER RENAULT WITH BARGE POLE WITH THEIR CAVALIER ATTITUDE TO CUSTOMER SERVICE ON SOMETHING THEY HAVE BUILT WHICH IS NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !
I got this 1998 model in 2001 and apart from the inevitable leaking sunroof and leak from interior light which I quickly got used to, I came to like the vehicle as was very handy for transporting three kids.
However from August 1996 (82,000 miles) it has embarked on a money-costing run of epic proportions; the timing belt went and I had to pay over £1200 to get that fixed involving re-building the engine. I then only had the car for six weeks and I thought an engine coil had gone, however it turned out to be off a couple of cylinders.
I took it to my dealer who quickly absolved themselves of all responsibility and kindly informed me that I now had a split cam belt and would need the engine rebuilt again to rectify the problem at the princely sum of £1400!
Avoid at all costs!
Having read recent disgruntled reviews about the scenic megane I can comiserate.Having usually driven VW's we took a chance and exchanged our reliable VW for a disel scenic megane for its shape and roomy interior. First impressions were ok. However, in the 8 months since ownership the RAC have had to rescue me several times and today the electronics in the car died! So,as soon as I can sort this problem out once and for all I will be reverting to a VW. In the mean time, I will be using my little old corsa work horse to get me to work....Renault,take heed, all customers want is a reliable car, is this asking too much?
