Review

The latest Audi A4 looks sharp on the outside and has one of the highest quality interiors in the executive car class. The BMW 3 Series is a slightly better all-rounder and offers keen drivers greater thrills behind the wheel, but the A4 is more comfortable if you stick with our favourite Sport Edition trim. The 35 TDI diesel that we also recommend in the A4 is quick, smooth and economical.

S line has lowered suspension and 19in wheels, so it's firmer-riding than some might like. It also adds leather and Alcantara seats, privacy glass, high-beam assist and even more overtly sporty styling inside and out.

This is our pick of the A4 range. The 161bhp 35 TDI has decent low-end urgency and is brisk enough for most situations. 0-62mph is rattled off in 8.2sec and officially it averages around 60mpg. It's also RDE2 compliant.
