The model
Read full reviewIn pre-production form, the second-generation Kia Niro Hybrid shows a lot of promise. Not only is it competitively priced, but it’s also generously equipped and spacious inside. That said, we suspect the PHEV model, with its punchier performance, lower running costs and ability to run for extended period of times on electric power will be the pick of the range.
The trim
See full equipmentDon’t immediately rule out this entry-level trim – it comes with dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and adaptive cruise control, so it's well worth considering if you’re looking for maximum value. Just bear in mind that you get a smaller infotainment screen than with pricier models.
The engine
See full engine specsWith 180bhp and an official 0-62mph of 9.6 seconds the Niro PHEV should feel much quicker than the Hybrid. It can officially travel up to 40 miles on electric power alone when fully charged, beating the 31 miles of the more expensive Audi Q3 TFSIe and matching the range of the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid. Impressive tax breaks for the PHEV make it a very cheap company car option.
