The Kia Sportage offers a generous amount of space front and rear, plus a large boot and one of best interiors in its class. In our favourite 3 trim, you get loads of equipment, and entry-level trims make a lot of sense compared with pricier rivals. The Hyundai Tucson is slightly cheaper, but the Sportage is a more polished alternative.

This sportier trim level adds some extra style, with 18in or 19in alloy wheels (depending on the engine) and exterior tweaks. It also upgrades the infotainment screen to a 12.3in one with built-in sat-nav and adds adaptive cruise control, driver lumbar support, suede leather upholstery and keyless entry/start.

This plug-in hybrid pairs the 1.6-litre T-GDI petrol engine with an electric motor and a larger 13.8kWh battery. This should be good enough to drive on electric power alone for most short commutes of over 35 miles. Combined power output is higher than the HEV at 261bhp and this is four-wheel drive only.
