The Kia Stonic handles tidily, is well equipped and gets a great warranty, but there are plenty of other areas where it doesn’t shine. Many other small SUVs offer more space in the rear seats and in the boot, and are more refined, too.

GT-Line adds a sportier look thanks to 17in alloy wheels and sportier styling. You also get built-in sat-nav, privacy glass, cloth and faux leather seats, LED headlights, LED fog lights, a reversing camera and automatic front windscreen wipers.

The 99bhp 1.0 T-GDi engine is a punchy performer, and the manual’s 0-60mph time of 10.7sec isn’t too far off that of the 10.4sec time you’ll get from the more powerful engine. There’s a fair amount of shove but it can struggle from low revs.
