The latest Mercedes SL trades the previous version's slightly dumpy looks and handling for something more aggressive. It's still more of a grand tourer than a sports car, but is now extremely composed, and, with its extra dose of practicality, it’s more versatile than ever.

Similar in style to the Premium but gets more kit such as larger 21in wheels, massaging front seats, a head-up display, augmented reality for the navigation system and more blacked-out exterior elements.

The SL63 features the same turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 as the SL55 but benefits from an extra 108bhp. We've yet to sample this model but it is significantly more expensive than the SL55 and only a touch quicker (0-62mph is a claimed 3.6 seconds) so we're not convinced it is worth the extra expense.
