2023 BMW Alpina D4 S Gran Coupe verdict and specs
Could Alpina’s latest take on the diesel super-saloon be all the car you’d ever need?...
Ever since the emissions scandal, buyers of performance cars have been steadily moving away from diesel power, which is one of the reasons why BMW won’t offer you an M440d in Gran Coupe form. Even the two-door version has since been taken off sale.
It’s safe to say, then, that the Alpina D4 S Gran Coupe will be a rare sight on UK roads, but don’t let that put you off, because what Alpina has built is arguably the pinnacle of the performance executive cruiser – fast and frugal, comfortable and cosseting, exciting and engaging. Indeed, if you are a high-mileage driver with a keen focus on low fuel consumption but still values performance and dynamics, it ticks every box.
Of course, with a starting price of £65,700, it’s certainly not cheap (it’s £8075 more than an M340d saloon) but if this is, as we suspect, the pinnacle of the fast diesel, we reckon that it is worth every penny.
