Audi S4 and S4 Avant revealed - all you need to know

The Audi S4 is Audi’s sub-RS4 performance saloon and estate. The latest version has improved performance and efficiency over the outgoing model.

What is it?

The S4 is the second-tier performance variant of the A4, available in saloon and Avant estate form. Subtly upgraded styling and improved performance mark out the S4.

What engines can I choose from?

There’s only one: a 3.0-litre V6, producing 349bhp and 369lb ft torque, coupled to an eight-speed Tiptronic semi-automatic gearbox. Driven through all four wheels via Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system, it propels the S4 to 62mph in 4.7sec – 4.9 for the Avant – and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

Audi claims the S4 saloon achieves 38.1mpg and has CO2 emissions of less than 170g/km, while the Avant achieves 37.6mpg and 175g/km.

How much equipment does it come with?

Standard kit on the Audi S4 is fairly comprehensive, due to its position near the top of the A4 range. A diamond-stitched leather interior is available in black, grey or red as standard, as are 18in alloys, aluminium interior trim and a sat-nav.

Also included is adaptive cruise control with integrated lane assist, which can take over steering in slow-moving urban traffic, as well as a variety of safety features including obstacle avoidance and rear cross traffic assist, which warns drivers reversing into a road of approaching traffic.

Its MMI navigation plus system is the range-topping infotainment system, and comes with an 8.3in screen mounted high on the dashboard.

Audi’s virtual cockpit is an optional extra, which replaces the dials with a 12.3in digital display. You can also add a Bang and Olufsen sound system, 19in alloys and enhanced smartphone connectivity.

How much will it cost?

UK prices have not yet been confirmed, but in Europe, the Audi S4 and S4 Avant cost 59,300 euros (around £46,782) and Avant starts at 61,150 euros (around £48,241) respectively.

Anything else I should know?

Luggage space matches the A4 saloon and Avant, at 480 litres for the S4, and 505 litres for the Avant, rising to 1510 litres with the seats folded.

It will compete against the Mercedes-AMG C43, Jaguar XE S and BMW 335i when it goes on sale.
