Best family SUV for off-roading

Land Rover Defender 90 D250 HSE

Car of the Year Awards logo - MotorEasy

Some people need a vehicle that can handle itself off road simply so they can go about their daily lives – farmers, for example. Others go off-roading for fun. If you fit into either of those camps, you probably wouldn’t choose the other family SUVs featured here; what you want is a Land Rover Defender.

When the going gets tough, the latest iteration of the Defender just keeps going, especially in three-door 90 guise. It’s more manoeuvrable than the longer 110 and 130 models and can tackle even steeper slopes. You can tailor it to suit different types of terrain at the press of a button, and our preferred D250 3.0-litre diesel engine is ideal for low-speed slogging.

With optional air suspension and an electronic active differential, the Defender is virtually a match for the Jeep Wrangler off road, and is far comfier and better to drive on it. As such, it justifies its high price
