Best family SUV for off-roading

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

With World War 2 looming, the US Army needed a light reconnaissance vehicle that could go anywhere. As a result, Jeep was born. And while some brands lose their pedigree over time, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon shows that off-roading is still at Jeep’s core.

In our 2023 4x4 mega-test, the Rubicon proved nigh on unstoppable, driving up, over and through the toughest obstacles we could find with ease and outperforming all of its rivals, including the Ford Ranger Raptor and Ineos Grenadier.

Key to that capability is the number of off-road-focused features it comes with, including three differential locks (for maximum traction), a low-range gearbox (for greater crawling ability) and even a detachable front anti-roll bar, which untethers the front wheels from each other for extra travel over gnarly terrain.

With an old-school feel, the Wrangler is great fun to drive off road. It’s a lot less impressive on the road, but in this 4x4, you really can go anywhere.
