With a name meaning ‘warrior’ in Greek, the Dacia Sandero certainly fights hard against its small car competitors by offering impressive versatility for a very tempting low price. Now, it’s set to become even more desirable with the introduction of new, full hybrid power.

Indeed, where the Sandero and its higher-riding twin, the Sandero Stepway, were previously only available with a pure petrol engine, they have now gained some electrical assistance in the form of the Hybrid 155 power option. It’s the same setup that can be found in the larger Duster, Bigster and Jogger models.

As such, it combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with a small 1.4kWh battery and two electric motors, one of which acts as a generator for the engine. All together, it produces 153bhp and can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.3sec – punchier than a hybrid Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris.

According to Dacia, the hybrid system in both the Sandero and Sandero Stepway allows for up to 80% of town driving to be done purely on electric power, and makes use of regenerative braking to help recharge the battery. It also says fuel consumption is around 40% lower than an equivalent petrol engine.

You can have your Sandero hybrid with either mid-spec Expression or top-spec Journey trim. The former comes with touchscreen infotainment, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring, DAB radio, air conditioning, cruise control and a reversing camera.

Meanwhile, Journey adds a 7.0in digital driver’s display, sat-nav, a six-speaker sound system, automatic air-con, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless phone charging and a multi-view parking camera.

The Sandero Stepway hybrid is also available with all but the entry-level trim. Equipment largely mirrors that of the regular Sandero, except the Stepway also gets roof bars and a traction-control system to help you tackle slippery surfaces.

Prices for the Dacia Sandero hybrid start at £17,995, which undercuts its hybrid rivals by quite a margin, including the Honda Jazz, Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris. It’s the same story for the Dacia Sandero Stepway hybrid, which starts at £19,295.
