The E-Class Cabriolet’s recent face-lift means that our previous favourite model (the E350 SE) is no longer available. Fortunately, the four-cylinder diesels are now much more refined, and this entry-level E220 CDI now makes the most sense.
We still recommend SE trim to get the most comfortable ride, and the seven-speed automatic gearbox to get the smoothest gearshifts. In this combination, it’s a classy, commendable cruiser.
BMW’s 4 Series Convertible is ultimately more fun to drive, with sharper steering and better body control through bends. It’s also more comfortable at low speeds and has a little more headroom for back-seat passengers.
The Mercedes’ gearbox isn’t as slick as the BMW’s eight-speed unit, and you might find the triple-layer Comand infotainment system tricky to operate.
Should I add any options?
SE spec is the cheapest trim, but it’s still very well equipped. Bluetooth, climate control, DAB digital radio, sat-nav, leather upholstery and heated front seats are all standard.
A reversing camera is available for an extra £390, while air cushion multi-contour seats cost £380. Mercedes also offers a clever ‘Airscarf’ system to keep your neck warm with a vent built into the headrests, which will set you back £365.
