The Geneva motor show is just around the corner, which means so is the estate car arm of Volvo’s new product offensive, the V90

This means that large discounts are available on the outgoing V70, like the whopping £9330 saving we’ve found, which brings the V70’s price down to around the same as that of a well-equipped Ford Focus.

For

Refinement is decent in the V70, especially at motorway speeds, where there’s very little road and wind noise.

Being a Volvo, lugging loads reliably is what it does best, thanks in no small part to a solidly built interior and load area. Volvo’s penchant for safety, meanwhile, almost goes without saying.

The interior is comfortable and well appointed, offering electric windows all round, dual-zone climate control, leather-faced upholstery and Bluetooth connectivity, with sat-nav on the SE Nav trim seen here.

Against

As per the S80, the V70’s handling isn’t exactly sharp, with vague steering and an unsettled low-speed ride.

Luckily, both of these can be rectified in the options list, but a chunk of the saving on offer will be eaten up.

Should I add any options?

If you add the speed sensitive steering (usually £225) to sharpen up the V70’s handling, and the lowered sports suspension (£500), which includes laminated glass to boost refinement, you can save another £75, although the total price is boosted to £23,440.
