What are they like inside?
Both cars have quality cabins, although the R8’s is starting to show its age; many of the switches and instruments are borrowed from now-defunct Audi saloons.
The 911 has no such problems. The leather-trimmed dash looks bang up to date, while aluminium highlights make it feel the posher of the two cars. Its sat-nav and infotainment systems could be more user-friendly, however.

Dropping the 911’s electric hood takes just 18 seconds (compared with 25 for the R8) and it stows away neatly behind the rear seats. Top down, the Porsche does a better job of protecting passengers from buffeting, thanks to its higher windscreen and more effective wind deflector. The R8’s deflector does little to protect taller occupants from the elements.
The Porsche also has more head room with the roof up. However, long distances can be a pain because the seats don’t have adjustable lumbar support.
The 911 is the far more practical car. It has two extra seats and also has the bigger boot.
