Our verdict
From a size and practical standpoint, you won't find differences of night and day proportions between the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS. However, they're far from the same. The GLS is reasonably refined and loaded with kit – with particularly impressive safety equipment as standard – but its inconsistent interior quality and unsettled ride disappoint. It doesn’t live up to its billing as Mercedes’ flagship SUV.
The X7, meanwhile, delivers in every area, and then some. It's outstanding inside and phenomenally relaxing on the road, and it would be the clear winner even if it cost the same as the GLS. But it doesn't – it costs less to buy and has suffered far less deprecation too. The X7 is our winner.
