Used test: Mazda CX-5 vs Renault Koleos: verdict

A used Koleos make a lot of sense, thanks to its spacious interior and tempting prices, but could the sportier CX-5 be an even better buy?...

New Renault Koleos vs Mazda CX-5

Our Verdict

Although it's got space for a growing family and is commendably cheap to buy at this age, the Koleos finishes second in this test. Its sluggish performance wouldn't be such a big deal if the return for it was good fuel economy, but in real-world use it was actually the thirstier of these two cars. Likewise, although that soft suspension makes its handling feel slightly wayward, its ride can still get too easily upset by broken urban ruts and bumps.

So it's a victory for the CX-5. This is an SUV you can really enjoy driving, thanks to its keen handling and punchy engine. It also has a smart and practical interior and a bigger boot. True, its ride can also feel a little firm, but because it’s well controlled, it’s the more comfortable of the two. All told, it's a great used car and a worthy winner here.
