Used test: Renault Koleos vs Mazda CX-5

Temptingly priced and spacious inside, a used Renault Koleos makes sense as a family car, but could the sportier and faster Mazda CX-5 be a better large SUV buy?...

New Renault Koleos vs Mazda CX-5

Our Verdict

As you’ve probably guessed by now, the Koleos comes a distant second in this test. We could live with its sluggish performance if the return was good fuel economy, but it’s actually the thirstier of these cars. Likewise, its soft suspension brings roly-poly handling, yet its ride still gets upset by ruts and bumps. Yes, it’s cheaper on a PCP deal, but we’d definitely fork out the extra for the CX-5.

The CX-5 isn’t faultless; its ride is a bit firm, but at least it’s well controlled so it’s the more comfortable SUV overall. That’s one of the few black marks against it, though. This is an SUV you can enjoy driving, thanks to its keen handling and punchy engine. With the interior proving practical and smart, it’s a worthy five-star car.
