What should I look for in a used Peugeot 408 saloon?
When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.
Start by inspecting the exterior for any scuffs, dents and signs of kerbing on the alloy wheels, as well as uneven panel gaps or mismatched paint that could indicate previous repairs. Under the bonnet, check that the engine starts smoothly, runs without unusual vibrations, and produces no excessive smoke, with no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
During the test drive, listen for any knocks or unusual noises from the suspension, ensure the steering feels responsive, and check that the brakes are firm with no vibration. Make sure the gearbox shifts smoothly, and on manual models, confirm the clutch operates properly without slipping.
Inside the 408, look for general signs of wear and tear, and ensure all interior electronics are functioning correctly, including the infotainment system, air conditioning, parking sensors and electric controls. Check that the tyres are in good condition with even wear.
Finally, review the service history to confirm regular maintenance, ensure the VIN matches across the car and its documents, and consider carrying out a vehicle history check for added peace of mind.
