The Vauxhall Astra blends value with good ride comfort, tidy handling and adequate performance. We’d suggest sticking with the cheaper trim levels to make the most of the Astra’s keen pricing, as it struggles to trouble the more accomplished cars in the class. We'd go for the 1.2-litre 130 petrol engine and mid-spec GS trim.

Top-spec Astras come with larger 18in alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, 360-degree camera, head-up display, wireless phone-charging and a panoramic roof.

This is the most powerful petrol engine, producing 128bhp and with a 0-60mph time of 9.7sec. Top speed is 130mph. As well as a six-speed manual, there's also an eight-speed automatic option with the same performance figures.
