What should I look for in a used Volkswagen ID 7 hatchback?
When viewing a used car, always follow our used car buying checklist.
The Volkswagen ID 7 is often used as a taxi, company car and long-distance cruiser, so inspect the bodywork and alloy wheels carefully for scuffs, dents and kerb damage. Inside, check the seats, steering wheel and trim for excessive wear, especially on higher-mileage examples. Make sure the infotainment system responds promptly and that all touchscreen functions operate correctly.
As with any electric car, it's worth asking about the vehicle's charging history (to see if it’s been regularly rapid-charged or slow-charged) and ensuring both charging cables are present. Check that the car accepts both AC and DC charging without fault messages appearing on the dashboard.
The ID 7 relies heavily on software, so ensure all driver assistance systems work as intended. Test features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, parking sensors and the reversing camera. During the test drive, watch for warning lights or system errors, and check that any over-the-air (OTA) software updates have been carried out.
Finally, listen for suspension knocks and rattles over rough roads, particularly on cars fitted with larger alloy wheels or adaptive suspension. Also inspect the tyres for uneven wear, which could indicate poor wheel alignment or previous suspension damage.
What are the most common problems with a used Volkswagen ID 7 hatchback?
At the time of writing, the ID 7 has three recalls listed. To check whether a car has been affected, you can contact your local VW dealer. You will not need to pay for anything involving the recall.
Reason for recall
On VW ID 4 and ID 7 vehicles of a limited production period, the bolted connection of the front seats between the backrest and seat pan may be incorrect. The restraint effect of the seat may be insufficient in the event of an accident. There is therefore an increased risk for the occupants.
How the manufacturer will repair: On affected vehicles, the bolts on both front seat backrests must be replaced.

Reason for recall
The front passenger airbag may be faulty. In the event of an accident-related deployment, the front passenger airbag may have a reduced protective effect. The gas generator housing may also burst and components of the gas generator housing may come loose and cause serious or deadly injuries to vehicle occupants.
How the manufacturer will repair: The passenger airbag must be replaced.

On affected vehicles, there is a possibility a door may open unexpectedly.
How the manufacturer will repair: Update the software on the door handle control units so a message is displayed in the event of malfunction.

Is a used Volkswagen ID 7 hatchback reliable?
The ID 7 didn’t get enough responses to appear in the latest What Car? Reliability Survey, but its Volkswagen ID 3 and Volkswagen ID 4 siblings did feature. Unfortunately, these cars have a poor reliability record, with the ID 3 finishing in 14th place out of 20 electric cars, with a score of 87.7%. The ID 4, on the other hand, fared even worse, finishing in last place out of 27 electric SUVs, with a disappointing score of 79.6%.
As a brand, Volkswagen didn’t do much better. It finished in joint 24th place with Ford out of 30 manufacturers, placing above MG and Nissan, but below BMW, Skoda and Tesla.
