If you're looking for a car that's spacious, superb to drive and impressively refined, few are better than a Ford Mondeo.

This version will appeal equally to company car users and private buyers.

The 1.6-litre diesel engine at its heart is powerful and flexible enough to satisfy on any road, yet its CO2 output is just 114g/km, which puts it in the 16% band for company car tax. Get near the official fuel economy and there's also a theoretical 1000-mile range.

The Mondeo is also better to drive than anything else in this class. It handles and rides brilliantly, and steers so well it feels like a much smaller car. Its refinement is equally impressive and the controls are ideally weighted. It feels perfectly at ease on motorways, and agile and rewarding when the roads get twisty.

Inside the well-trimmed cabin there's space for five adults, and a huge 528-litre boot. Zetec trim is the one we'd go for, with alloys, Bluetooth and climate control all fitted as standard.
