The Lexus NX 450h plug-in hybrid (PHEV) attracts our full five star rating on account of its plush interior, impressive refinement, substantial pure electric range, low CO2 emissions and low company car tax rate. If you can't easily plug in your car, the NX 350h hybrid is a good compromise. It might not be as frugal or as hushed as the 450h, but it’s competitively priced, more efficient than non-hybrid rivals and should benefit from Lexus’s legendary reliability.

On the face of it, the cheapest Premium Pack model would seem to make a lot of sense. It gets plenty of standard equipment, including 18in alloys, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and artificial leather seats. The only caveat is that it comes with different suspension than the F-Sport versions we’ve tried so far.

The plug-in hybrid version of the Lexus NX can officially do up to 45 miles on pure battery power, before its 2.5-litre petrol engine takes over until you plug the car in again. Acceleration is surprisingly nippy, with 0-62mph taking 6.3 seconds.
