This 201bhp mild-hybrid petrol engine uses electric boost for extra power and efficiency, but it’s a little noisy when revved out, and doesn’t feel as fast as its power and performance figures suggest. It does, however, stack up well against equivalent units in competitors.

C200

This 197bhp engine is our pick of the diesel range because it delivers plenty of performance from low revs, and returns some of the best fuel economy figures for the class. It's not as refined as the equivalent engine in an Audi A4, but it settles down when you’re just cruising along.

C220d

We’ve yet to try the most powerful diesel in the range, but with 262bhp and a claimed 0-62mph sprint of just 5.7sec, we expect it’ll be more than fast enough for anything you can throw at it. It's not as efficient as the C200d though, officially managing mid-50mpg instead of 60mpg, so that’s worth considering.

C300d

The plug-in hybrid C300e will be of most interest to company car drivers. The electric motor is more than capable of keeping up with traffic up to motorway speeds, and the official electric range of up to 60 miles is double the BMW 330e's. You get 308bhp when the petrol engine kicks in (which happens seamlessly), giving a 0-62mph time of 6.1sec.

C43 4Matic Premium Plus

The C300e plug-in hybrid is the C-Class that makes most sense – especially if you're a company car driver (because it attracts a low BIK tax rating) or can charge at home. It can officially travel for up to 68 miles on electric power, with more than 50 miles perfectly realistic in the real world, but it also has the reassurance of a petrol engine on longer trips, and performs very strongly when both power sources are working together.

C300e

This trim level gets a 12.3in digital driver display and an 11.9in portrait-oriented central touchscreen with the latest MBUX infotainment system that includes wireless smartphone integration and a reversing camera. There’s also LED headlights, blind-spot monitoring, leather trim and heated front seats.

Saloon

Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.

As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.

Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.
